Who Invented The Motorcycle?

"Who invented the motorcycle? That should be a simple answer to a simple question. But the answer to "who invented the motorcycle" is quite complicated.  You can't answer who invented the motorcycle without defining what counts as a motorcycle?

There was a debate among historians on who invented the motorcycle. One group argued it was Sylvester Howard Roper, who invented the motorcycle which was steam powered in the year 1867. Second group stressed it was Gottlieb Daimler who invented the motorcycle which had the first gas-engine in 1885.   It is widely debated whether a steam powered motorcycle counts.  Those who feel a true motorcycle is gas powered will tell you it was Gottlieb Daimler who invented the motorcycle while purists believe an engine is an engine will say Sylvester Howard Roper is who invented the motorcycle because he invented the steam version before Gottlieb Daimler invented the motorcycle with a gas motor.  Regardless of the method of propulsion these men who invented the motorcycle pave the way for other early motorcycle versions.
